What is a commercial invoice?

A commercial invoice, sometimes referred to as a CI, is a document prepared by a seller. This document is provided to the buyer. It describes several important points of information such as the cargo, states the quantity and costs, terms of the transaction and delivery address. The more complete an invoice is, the easier it will be for your Customs declarant to use that information to make a fuss free declaration to authorities.

A commercial invoice is not to be confused with a tax invoice. A tax invoice usually includes all the information found in a commercial invoice, but it will also include any tax amount that is payable.

Important Notes:

It is highly advisable for sellers to use a standard format commercial invoice for all sales transactions. All commercial invoices you issue should be unique, serialized and signed. You should keep copies of these invoices archived for future reference.
